Astro City: The Dark Age vol.2

Client: Wildstorm/DC Comics
Date: August 27, 2007
Posted by JG

This story arc of Astro City takes place in the 1970s, so I gave the cover, and particularly the credits page typography, that curvy, tightly-kerned Art Deco-meets-Studio 54 look. The letters page, as usual, matches the color scheme of the cover art.

The second row shows the progression of lettering from writer Kurt Busiek's script and placements to the finished lettering proof. Up to this point, we've always lettered Astro City with the font AstroCity, created (as you might imagine) especially for the series. But for the Dark Age story arc, I suggested to Kurt that we use Chatterbox, which has a very specific 1960s/70s Marvel look to it. He agreed, and I think it's worked out nicely as a change of pace.
